10 Tips on Avoiding Wardrobe Wars from a Leander, TX Photographer

How to Minimize the Pain Points of Choosing Outfits for Your Family Photography Session

As a Leander-based motherhood and family photographer, I often hear from clients that one of the most challenging parts of preparing for a photography session is deciding what everyone should wear. Coordinating outfits for your family can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. With a little planning and guidance, you can create a cohesive and timeless look for your session. Here are my top tips to help minimize the stress and make choosing outfits a breeze.

1. Start with a Neutral Color Palette

Neutral tones such as creams, beiges, soft greys, and muted pastels work beautifully in photos. They create a timeless, airy feel and ensure the focus remains on your family’s expressions and connections rather than loud or busy clothing. Once you’ve chosen a neutral base, you can add subtle pops of color or texture for variety.

2. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and blue jeans. Instead, aim for coordination. Select a color palette of two to three complementary colors and mix patterns, textures, and solids within that range. For example, if you choose soft blues and creams, one person might wear a solid cream dress, another a blue shirt, and another a patterned piece that ties the colors together.

3. Consider the Location and Season

The setting of your photography session should influence your outfit choices. For outdoor sessions in Leander, consider the natural surroundings. Soft, earthy tones work well in parks or nature preserves, while brighter colors might pop in urban settings. Also, dress appropriately for the season. Lightweight fabrics are perfect for Texas summers, while cozy layers add warmth and texture during cooler months.

4. Prioritize Comfort (!!)

Comfort is key, especially for little ones. If your child is uncomfortable, it will show in the photos. Opt for clothes made of soft, breathable fabrics and avoid anything itchy or restrictive. Make sure shoes are practical and broken in to avoid complaints during the session.

5. Avoid Distracting Elements

Steer clear of clothing with large logos, graphics, or bold patterns that can be distracting. These elements can draw attention away from your family and disrupt the cohesive look of your photos. Instead, focus on classic and simple pieces that will stand the test of time.

6. Add Layers and Accessories

Layers and accessories can add depth and interest to your photos. Think cardigans, scarves, hats, or jewelry that complements the overall look. For children, a cute bow, suspenders, or a textured blanket can be wonderful additions.

7. Plan Ahead

Don’t wait until the last minute to decide on outfits. Start planning a few weeks in advance to allow time for shopping, ordering, or borrowing pieces. Lay out everyone’s outfits together to ensure they look cohesive as a group.

8. Seek Guidance (aka. Text me!)

As your photographer, I’m here to help! Many photographers, including myself, offer wardrobe consultations or style guides to make the process easier. Feel free to text me your outfit ideas and we can come up with a quick painless plan together! (Links and all!)

9. Test the Outfits

Have everyone try on their outfits a few days before the session to ensure a good fit and comfort. This also gives you a chance to address any issues, such as wrinkles or missing accessories, in advance.

10. Keep It Personal

While these tips provide a framework, remember that your photos should reflect your family’s personality. Incorporate elements that feel authentic to you, whether it’s a favorite scarf, heirloom jewelry, or a child’s cherished stuffed animal.

Choosing outfits for your family photography session doesn’t have to be stressful. With these tips and a bit of preparation, you’ll feel confident and ready to capture beautiful, lasting memories. If you’re planning a family session in Leander or the surrounding area, I’d love to help you every step of the way—from wardrobe planning to delivering stunning images that you’ll treasure forever.
