What to Expect at Your Maternity Photo Shoot - Leander, Texas Maternity Photographer
A guide from a maternity photographer serving families in Leander and the greater North Austin area.
If you're planning maternity photos, it's completely normal to wonder what the experience will actually feel like.
Will it feel awkward?
Will you know how to pose?
Will your toddler cooperate?
Will you even recognize yourself in the photos?
After photographing many motherhood sessions, I’ve learned that the biggest misconception about maternity photography is this: it’s not about perfectly posed images.
It’s about capturing the quiet transition into motherhood — exactly as you are in this moment.
Here’s exactly what you can expect when you book a maternity photo session with me.
1. When to Schedule Your Maternity Photos
Timing matters more than most people realize.
If this is your first pregnancy, I typically recommend scheduling your maternity session between 30–34 weeks. First-time bumps tend to grow a little more gradually, and this window gives us a beautiful, round belly while you're still relatively comfortable.
If this is your second baby (or beyond), I usually suggest 28–32 weeks. Second pregnancies tend to show earlier, and this timing helps ensure we capture that perfect stage before the final weeks become more physically demanding.
Every pregnancy is different, but these windows tend to create the most flattering and comfortable experience.
2. The Creative Planning Call
Before your session, we’ll have a creative planning call.
This is honestly one of my favorite parts of the process.
Instead of just showing up and hoping for the best, we’ll talk through:
wardrobe ideas and styles (with links!)
overall style and mood
sentimental elements you might want to incorporate
whether your partner or children will be part of the session
Some families bring heirloom pieces, baby shoes, or meaningful fabrics. Others want a more editorial, minimal look.
The goal is simple: your photos should feel like you.
3. What If You Feel Awkward in Front of the Camera?
Almost every mother tells me the same thing before her session:
“I’m really awkward in photos.”
And I completely understand why. Pregnancy can be a vulnerable time. Your body is changing. You may not feel like your usual self.
But here’s the truth:
Give me five minutes.
Within the first few moments of shooting, something shifts.
Your shoulders relax.
Your breathing slows.
You stop thinking about the camera.
Because at the end of the day, this was never about taking pretty pictures.
It’s about telling your story — right here, right now — during this brief season of becoming a mother.
4. What the Session Actually Looks Like
When you arrive, we’ll start by settling in and taking a moment to breathe.
Then we’ll:
Look through your wardrobe options
Choose the best starting look
Begin shooting in a relaxed, guided way
I’ll gently guide you through movement and posture so you never feel like you have to “figure it out” on your own.
No stiff posing.
No pressure to perform.
Just small adjustments that help you feel natural and confident.
5. Where the Session Takes Place
I specialize in studio maternity photography.
Studio sessions allow us to control the light, the mood, and the overall aesthetic in a way outdoor sessions often can't.
My primary studio partner is
The Living Room
It’s one of my favorite creative spaces in the Austin area — warm, minimal, and beautifully designed for motherhood photography.
The studio environment allows us to create images that feel timeless, intimate, and editorial all at once.
6. What to Wear for Your Maternity Photos
While I don’t maintain a full client wardrobe, I personally help plan your outfits with you.
Together we’ll choose pieces that photograph beautifully and feel authentic to your style.
We’ll talk about:
flattering silhouettes for your stage of pregnancy
neutral tones and textures that photograph well
outfits for both family and solo portraits
A thoughtful wardrobe plan can completely elevate the final images, so we take time to get this right.
7. Including Your Partner and Children
Yes — partners and children are always welcome.
In fact, I encourage it.
We typically structure the session like this:
First half of the session:
Family photos with your partner and children.
Second half of the session:
Portraits focused just on you and your growing belly.
This gives us space to capture both the family story and the motherhood transition.
8. The Moment When Everything Changes
One of my favorite parts of maternity sessions is something small that many clients don’t even notice.
At the beginning of the session, most mothers hold a little tension.
Their shoulders are slightly raised.
Their posture is cautious.
But then something beautiful happens.
About halfway through the session, I see it.
Their shoulders relax naturally.
They sink into the moment.
They stop thinking about the camera.
And that’s when the most meaningful images are made.
Those are the photos families come back to years later.
9. What Maternity Photos Really Capture
Maternity photography isn’t just documenting a pregnancy.
It’s capturing a moment that disappears faster than anyone expects.
The anticipation.
The quiet before life changes again.
The strength and softness of motherhood at the same time.
When we photograph this season intentionally, it becomes part of your family story forever.
Planning Your Maternity Photo Session
If you're expecting and considering maternity photos in the Leander or Austin area, the best time to begin planning is early in your second trimester.
That way we can secure your ideal window and thoughtfully design a session that reflects your story.
Because maternity photography was never meant to be about perfect photos.
It’s about remembering who you were in the moment right before everything changed.
